Saving Energy website goes live

Nov 7, 2017

The Department of Energy’s Clean Energy Directorate has created this saving energy website to make information on energy efficiency accessible.    The website has been established with funding support from the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).

The website has three major components:

  • Programmes: this overviews the various energy efficiency programmes of the Clean Energy Directorate.
  • Appliance Efficiency: this provides detailed information on the Appliance Standards and Labelling regulations.  The Appliance Standards and Labelling regulations have been put in place to promote the purchase of energy efficient appliances. The regulations have two components: a requirement that certain appliances carry a South African Energy Efficiency Label and the application of Minimum Energy Performance Standards (MEPS) to several appliances.
  • Municipal Energy Efficiency Demand Side Management Programme: the EEDSM programme supports municipalities in their efforts to reduce electricity consumption by optimising their use of energy. Selected municipalities receive grants for the planning and implementation of energy efficient technologies ranging from traffic and street lighting to energy efficiency in buildings and water service infrastructure.
